Where do Bed Bugs Come From

Theories believe that bed bugs existed as early as when the human civilization came into force.  Bats were among the other animals and creatures that existed during the ancient days. The bats have blood-sucking parasites on them. It is believed that bed bugs to have also evolved along with progress and transformation of the human beings. Bedbugs do not have any specific source of origination. The infestation of bed bugs has nothing to do with cleanliness or hygiene of a person or a place.  Bedbugs find several ways to enter the world of warm-blooded animals.  Modern life is witnessing a high volume of travel all over the world. This makes it quite easy for the bed bugs also travel all over the places, thus making their presence felt in all the countries.

Frequent Sources of Bed Bugs

1. Animals:  Bed bugs feed on warm-blooded animals, including bats, rodents and birds.  It is quite important to consider and check if there are birds or mice around the area of infestation. Though, bed bugs do not live on pets or animals, they move to different places easily through the fur of the pet, its shelter or clothing.
2. Baggage: Luggage, clothes and baggage are some easy passages through which bed bugs make an entry into apartments, hotels and houses, etc. The discreet hiding places of the bed bugs on the clothes and the baggage makes it quite difficult to ascertain their presence. They do not need dirt or trash to survive and can live without food for nearly a year. Therefore, it is hard to notice the presence of bedbugs before the pest community develops into an infestation. They seem to be present even in the most luxurious hotel rooms.
3. Used Mattress and furniture: Mattress is one of the favorite hideouts of the bed bugs. Since the bed bugs feed on human blood, they prefer places where people sleep, so that they are close to their food source. They are found in the seams, folds, tufts, headboard and bed frame.   Their Furniture, especially bedroom furniture in hotels and other temporary places of accommodation make yet another bed bug habitat. At homes, they are spotted on sofa, frames, wooden lamp stands, etc.  Pest control authorities often warn against buying used mattresses and furniture as the chance of bed bug infestation is quite high.
4. Common Walls: Most of the modern constructions use a shared wall between houses. The presence of the central duct system in most of the apartments makes it even easier for the bed bugs to travel from one house to another. This holds true for hotels and other places of accommodation. Though the bugs cannot fly, they can move swiftly over walls and house ceilings. Cracks in the floors and wall crevices, pipes also aid transferring of bedbugs.
5. Clutter: Though, bedbugs do not thrive on dirt or filth, avoiding and organizing clutter at home ensures fewer hiding places and better chances to inhibit bed bug growth and infestation.
